Interesting stat of the day: The last three FedEx Cup Champions have been Team TaylorMade athletes. As the world’s best return to Eastlake to vie for the Tour Championship and the season-long points race that earns you beaucoup bucks and lifelong clout, a handful of TaylorMade athletes are primed to make it a four-peat. Another interesting stat, only four teams across American professional sports have four-peat bragging rights. Bonus points if you can name them.
Back to this week’s showdown. Let’s unpack who’s in the best position, how they got there and what’s in the bag for Team TaylorMade in Atlanta.
World Ranking: No. 3
FedEx Cup Ranking: No. 11
Collin comes into the week ranked No. 11 in FedEx Cup standings and is the best positioned to grab the podium. He got there on the strength of his two victories, including a major championship, and eight top 10 finishes. Morikawa famously switched to a set of P•7MC irons (5i-9i) before claiming the Claret Jug at Royal St. George’s. Coming into this week, he’s carrying a combo set complete with P•7MC (4i-6i) and P•7MB (7i-PW). He made the change in effort to better control launch and spin in his scoring clubs. He’s gaming a P770 4-iron for that little bit extra and a prototype putter that’s seeing its first live action. It’s the same driver and 3-wood he used in both his major championship victories alongside a SIM2 Max 5-wood (19°).

The reigning FedEx Cup Champion returns to Eastlake sitting at No. 15 in the standings. Due to COVID-challenged scheduling, his November 2020 Masters win counts towards his quest to go back-to-back in the FedEx. He added to his chances with eight top-10 finishes across the season. Historically, he’s played well in Atlanta – tallying six top 10s across 11 starts, including a victory here in 2020. His equipment is dialed in for the week, and he comes in with no significant changes to report.

It’s been an interesting few weeks inside the bag of Rory McIlroy. Since the well-documented encounter with the Jersey Turnpike, we’ve worked hand-in-hand to find a 3-wood that delivers the specific performance he demands. Following an in-depth range session, he’s coming into this week with a similar 3-wood setup to the one that helped in his victory at Quail Hollow earlier this year. He’s keeping his trusty 19° Rescue in the bag and has added a 46° Milled Grind 3 pitching wedge.

Since rejoining Team TaylorMade in May of 2021, Sergio has improved his play with five top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour – including a T6 at the BMW Championship to stamp his ticket to Eastlake. He ranks 3rd in Strokes Gained Off the Tee and 18th in total driving distance behind the power of his SIM2 Max driver. He was one of the first athletes to switch to the 2021 TP5 golf ball, choosing to do so as an un-contracted player at the time.
