Circuit

Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Chad Ramey are underway at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua and we’re here to give you the inside scoop on what we observed during practice rounds this week.

Collin, who qualified via his Top 30 finish in the FedEx Cup in 2022 continued to have the all-new P·7MCs, his custom P·7MBs aka P·7CMs and two new wedges in the bag. Chad Ramey secured his invite to Maui via his first career PGA TOUR win in his rookie season at the Corales Puntacana Championship and debuts his all-new P·7MC’s. As for Scottie and any other equipment changes…in due time my friends, in due time.

Inside Kapalua

Here's the skinny on Kapalua: It. Is. HILLY. I asked Collin’s caddy, JJ Jakovac, where Kapulua ranked on the hardest walks on TOUR for a caddy and he promptly said the Plantation Course is atop the list.

Kapalua is one of the few courses where players and their caddies get to take carts during practice rounds and perhaps one of the only courses where during tournament play on multiple holes players and caddies are shuttled from tee box to fairway or from green to the next tee box.

Unfortunately, myself and Team TaylorMade content creator Brooke Burton learned that the hard way. As we approached the clubhouse on our first day at Kapalua, we saw a sign for the driving range figuring we could just walk there. Little did we know, it would be a 20-minute uphill walk through the forests of Kapalua.

We made it…barely. Later we learned from a Kapalua staffer that he could count on one hand the amount of times someone walked from the clubhouse all the way to the driving range. We are proud part of history….

Besides being humbled in the realms of conditioning, what else did we learn this week? Let’s take you through it.

Scottie Being Scottie

My favorite thing about Scottie Scheffler, besides the fact that he also does the above armband drills like us amateurs, is that every second of every day Scottie is nothing other than Scottie. His personality is kind of like his equipment…rarely changes…always has the same results.

We spent a lot of time with Scottie this week and not only did he show that his game didn’t miss a beat – especially on the Par 3 11th hole on Monday when he put his tee shot to about 2 inches – but mentally he’s pretty different from most players.

We asked Scottie what his 2023 goals were and he said that he didn’t have goals, he just goes out there and plays. That defines Scottie in a nutshell. Day-by-day, week-by-week…win-by-win. That approach seems like it’s working!

As for his equipment, same old same old for Scottie (kind of…). In Kapalua he will have an 8° driver, 15° 3-wood and his usual P·7TW irons 5-PW. Take a look at some snaps Brooke got throughout the week and some in hand images.

Collin Is Ready to Win

Collin Morikawa is ready to roll in 2023. We observed that from his detailed practice sessions this week. Collin worked hard this week on all aspects of his game, with some putting plate drills, swing video review and in-depth green reading with his caddy during practice rounds.

When we spoke with him about the 2023 season, he said his biggest goal for this year is simply to get back in the win column.

“I want to get back in the winners circle. There’s a lot more than that, there’s winning majors again but I’ve put a lot of work in to get back on top and hold a trophy. We put so much into it and I know it’s very tough, but I want to get back in that winners circle”
Collin Morikawa

As for his gear, Collin has made two changes in the wedge department for 2023. He has a new Milled Grind 3 standard bounce and low bounce 56° in the bag this year after the grind of his previous 56° was creating too much spin.

Collin is sticking with his MG3 60° TW wedge but has switched to a raw head with his swing weight modified from D4 to D2. This change came after a discussion with another player about the benefits of a lightweight wedge allowing a more aggressive approach and not have to worry about hitting it too far with less mass in the club.
