Long and straight. The golfer’s dream. That’s exactly why our TaylorMade engineers went on a mission to design irons that can be described in two simple words: Straight Distance.
DESIGNED FOR STRAIGHT DISTANCE
So, what sets the all-new P·790 irons apart? It starts with a new face material – 4340M. This material is 20 percent stronger than what we used in previous P·790 irons. As such, TaylorMade engineers were able to make the face stronger and faster. This results in faster balls speeds and longer carry distances throughout the set#.

The new 4340M forged face material also allowed our teams to increase the sweet spot by up to 24% compared to 2023 P·790 irons. * Let’s face it, we could all use a little more forgiveness!

P·790 AND QI IRONS SIDE-BY-SIDE
It’s no secret that many golfers in the game improvement category have a propensity for the slice. So, why do other game improvement irons have a fade bias in the long irons? Don’t worry, it didn’t make sense to our engineers either. That’s why, as you can see from the chart above, we designed the all-new Qi irons to be the straightest distance irons in golf.

Qi irons also employ FLTD CG to benefit launch. The Integrated System Design present in Qi irons facilitates communication among key technologies throughout the set. This is crucial because the face design, Speed Pocket™ functionality, and mass distribution are intricately interconnected, collectively working to improve ball speed consistency, launch angles and spin rates.
Both irons also feature a larger sweet spot than their predecessors. As we stated earlier, the use of 4340M forged face material in P·790 allowed engineers to enlarge the sweet spot by up to 24 percent. In Qi irons, the increase in sweet spot is driven by an increased blade length.

Perhaps the most significant difference between Qi and P·790 irons is in shaping. As they’re designed for maximum distance and forgiveness, Qi irons have a thicker top line and overall larger profile. Conversely, P·790 irons take on a more compact players shape that includes a slimmed down top line. Their overall profile inspires confidence and allows for playability without sacrificing the distance and forgiveness synonymous with the P·790 line.

Qi irons are also available in a High Launch (HL) model. This model is designed for golfers seeking additional launch and added speed. Their lofts are 2° weaker than the standard Qi model, and the weight is up to 26g lighter.

WHICH IRON IS BEST FOR YOU?
With all the R&D learnings in play...let’s get back to basics and talk like golfers to make the decision on which iron you should play. First, let’s be honest about your level of ball striking with irons and what performance characteristics matter the most to your game. Then, go through this checklist:
- If you strike the center of the face relatively consistently and want more workability and accuracy, you’re a P·790 player.
- If you are an inconsistent ball-striker looking for an iron that’s easier to hit solidly and launch high, the straight distance and forgiveness of the face construction of Qi will help make mishits feel and look like center-face strikes.
- There is a world where you can play both! If you struggle with long iron consistency, but are confident with mid and shorter irons, take advantage of our custom ordering system and build yourself a combo set!
- Lastly, if you have a slower swing speed and need help finding increased clubhead speed and peak height with all the performance benefits of a Qi iron, you’re a Qi HL player.
