The Open Championship returns to Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time since 2014, the site of Rory McIlroy’s third major triumph. He comes into the week riding high after going birdie-birdie on the last two holes to win the Scottish Open by a single shot. If you missed his incredible 2-iron into the 18th green, treat yourself to this splendid camera work:
Once again, Team TaylorMade sends a loaded roster of championship contenders prepared to take home the season’s final major championship. Let’s dive into some of the sights and sounds from Hoylake, including some of the best Team TaylorMade social posts from this week, a full photo gallery and a look at WITB for TaylorMade athletes.
One of the most iconic symbols of The Open is its unmistakable yellow scoreboard. Our design team looked to it (fair to call them “scoreboard watchers”?) for inspiration when creating this year’s championship staff bag. Would it be an Open Championship without a little 2-iron testing? Collin was on the range with a new toy that may find it way into play at Royal Liverpool. While the forecast is for wet conditions and moderate winds (gusts up 35mph), hitting the ball low and getting it rolling is your friend on links courses. We’re here for all the stingers.
Speaking of stingers and links golf, here’s why Tiger Woods loves that style of course.
We can’t wait to see Tiger back on the course, but there’s someone playing this week who’s been on a Tiger-like run for the last year. From tee-to-green, Scottie Scheffler has been as dominant as any player in the history of the game. Here are some mind-boggling stats to support the claim:
- Scottie hasn’t finished worse than 12th in any start worldwide since last October.
- Been inside the top-10 following 23 of his last 28 rounds played.
- His tie for 3rd at the Scottish Open was his 7th consecutive top-5 finish on the PGA Tour. The last player to do that was Tiger in 2007-08 (11 consecutive top-5s).
- Scottie is averaging 2.81 strokes gained tee-to-green per round in 2022-23.
- The only average currently better is Woods’ 2006 campaign, when he averaged 2.98 per round.
- Scottie leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained off-the-tee, strokes gained approach, greens in regulation, scoring average and strokes gained total.
- He’s a combined 62-under-par in majors since the beginning of 2020
