In the world of professional golf, where the echo of accolades can sometimes drown out the softer tones of humility, there’s Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 with an air of approachability, authenticity and relateablity that belies his extraordinary achievements. Maybe it’s just the laid back Texan in him.

The Hero World Challenge is the most recent example and is a testament to his work ethic and perpetual quest for improvement, even as he comes off one of the most stellar seasons in professional golf history.

Scottie Scheffler: From Record-Setting Season to a Hero’s Triumph

Coming off a record-setting year, it's hardly a surprise that Scheffler found himself atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of the Hero World Challenge, hosted by none other than Tiger Woods. His 2022-23 season flirted with matching something only achieved by Woods in his legendary 2000 season—hitting 75 percent of greens in regulation or more. Scheffler fell just short at 74.43%.

The year also saw him lead the Tour in strokes gained approach, gaining 1.20 strokes per round. Scheffler's sum of 89.08 strokes gained approach for the season surpassed any other player by a significant margin, with TaylorMade teammate Collin Morikawa finishing second at 62.43. Beyond the approach, he cemented his position among the elite drivers in the game, leading the Tour in strokes gained off-the-tee and showcasing his prowess with the driver.

His all-encompassing performance led to an exceptional strokes gained tee-to-green average of 2.62 per round for the season, the second-best in PGA Tour history, trailing only Tiger Woods in 2006.

Oh, his 2022-23 adjusted scoring average of 68.63 was the 7th-best single season mark of all-time. Tiger Woods has the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th best.

After a seasons that rivaled numbers we haven’t seen since Woods in his prime, it’s only fitting that Scheffler captured victory at The Hero World Challenge, an event The Big cat hosted for a 24th time.

The victory, Scheffler’s 7th on the PGA Tour, was marked by a stellar third round where he dismantled the par-5s. Notably, an eagle on the third hole, a birdie on the sixth, and another eagle on the 15th propelled him third-round score of 65 (-7), establishing a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. On the final day, Scheffler continued his pursuit of the podium, making consecutive birdies on holes 6 and 7 to reach an 18-under-par and extend his lead to four shots. He would finish the day at 20-under-par and three shots clear of the field.
