Behind the Design: Women's British Open Staff Bag & Accessories
In 2024, the Women’s British Open returns to one of golf’s most storied venues in Scotland for the third time. The host club has a rich history of women’s golf traditions. This year’s staff bag and accessories celebrate those traditions as well as fervent Scottish pride.
STAFF BAG INSPIRATION
When you see the Women’s British Open staff bag for the first time, you’ll be immediately reminded of where the tournament is being played. The bag is emblazoned with a blue and white Scottish flag.
The bag’s side panels are white in their base colour and feature blue cursive TaylorMade logos. Each logo is courted by Scotland’s national flower, the thistle. The inner linings of the pockets also offer a nod to the thistle and Scottish fashion with their pink tartan pattern.
A unicorn rests beneath each logo. The unicorn is the national animal of Scotland. Ancient lore holds that it’s the only animal capable of defeating England’s national animal, the lion. A unicorn also adorns Scottish passports.
STAFF BAG EASTER EGGS
While the staff bag exudes Scottish pride, it also pays homage to the host venue. The word “HOME” can be found on the bag’s handle where it honors the iconic course. On the front valuables pocket, a gold silhouette of St. Andrews Cathedral glistens against the blue foreground of the Scottish flag.
Mary Queen of Scots is said to have been the first woman to ever play a round of golf at the host course in 1552. Her royal portrait sits prominently on the ball pocket with white 1552 script gilded just above.
The host venue was also the first to establish a women’s golf club in 1867. On the bottom of the bag the year is designated and followed by the words “First Women’s Golf Club”.
Prince William and Princess Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay met while attending university together in St. Andrews. A heart with the letters W and K on either side sits proudly on the backside valuables pocket where it pays tribute to their royal union.
HEADCOVER DETAILS
Pink thistle colours and tartan designs announce themselves once again on the blade and mallet putter headcovers.
The driver and fairway wood headcovers continue with many of the same themes found on the staff bag: green and pink thistle, a portrait of Mary Queen of Scots, and a gold silhouette of St. Andrews Cathedral set against the Scottish blue backdrop.
