TaylorMade Gear

There's no better feeling than getting up and down for par and keeping the momentum of your round headed in the right direction. While some short game shots are more difficult than others, getting the ball in the hole quickly is paramount to shooting low scores and playing your best.

At TaylorMade, we believe that playing the right wedges goes a long way in alleviating short game frustrations. That’s why we’ve dedicated so much time and energy to designing wedges that help golfers turn their short game into a weapon instead of a liability.

Both the Hi-Toe 4 and Milled Grind 4 wedge franchises incorporate cutting-edge technologies to inspire confidence, enable versatility, and help you turn three shots into two. Let’s dive in for a closer look at each wedge side by side to see which one (or combination) is best for your game.

HI-TOE 4 AND MG4 AT A GLANCE

Both Milled Grind 4 (MG4) and Hi-Toe 4 wedges were designed with versatility in mind. Different grinds, lofts and finishes allow you to execute a full menu of short game shots in all kinds of conditions. However, there are some distinct differences between the two wedges that are worth noting.

From a shaping perspective, MG4 has a classic shape that’s been inspired by the best players in the world including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. In the address position, you’ll notice a straight leading edge that blends seamlessly with the hosel and minimal offset for a traditional, rounded profile.

By comparison, Hi-Toe 4 wedges have an exaggerated toe pad that gives you an added layer of confidence at address. With the pronounced toe, the clubface is larger and more forgiving. The larger toe also creates an elevated CG that fosters low-launching, high-spinning shots for consistent control. On Tour, Collin Morikawa frequently employs a Hi-Toe 4 wedge when he's playing a course with deep rough. He likes the extra surface area with which to work and added forgiveness Hi-Toe 4 provides.

Hi-Toe 4 wedges feature full-face grooves in lofts 54°-60°. This allows you to hit shots using the entire face while maintaining control. The bottom groove also has a gold paint fill that makes centering the ball easy, while also ensuring the clubface is square to the target.

Hi-Toe 4 and MG4 come stock in different finishes. You can choose from either a satin chrome or black finish in MG4, whereas Hi-Toe comes in a copper finish. Over time, this finish will patina giving Hi-Toe 4 a unique look that in no way affects performance.

While both Hi-Toe 4 and MG4 wedges are designed for golfers of all abilities, those looking for an added layer of confidence and forgiveness will benefit from Hi-Toe 4. Conversely, golfers that prefer a more rounded, traditional look will appreciate MG4.

VERSATILITY WHERE YOU NEED IT MOST

What makes both MG4 and Hi-Toe 4 especially unique are the wide array of different grinds they’re available in. No matter your swing style or what type of conditions you play in, there’s a grind in both the MG4 and Hi-Toe 4 families to suit your game.

HIGH-BOUNCE GRINDS

For golfers that struggle making consistent contact, have steep angles of attack, or play in soft conditions, more bounce is better.

In Hi-Toe 4, that’s going to be the All-Terrain Wide (ATW) grind. With the widest sole in the Hi-Toe 4 family, ATW provides maximum forgiveness and keeps the leading edge from digging. It also helps golfers make consistent contact out of the sand.

The High Bounce (HB) and High Bounce Wide (HBW) grinds in MG4 provide many of the same benefits. HB features a standard width sole design with added heel relief for increased shotmaking. To prevent the leading edge from digging, the HBW grind is the widest sole of the MG4 family with maximum camber and full sole symmetry which allows the club to glide across the top of the grass.

MID-BOUNCE GRINDS

Golfers with neutral angles of attack that present the club face square to the target are best suited for mid-bounce grinds.

The All-Terrain Standard (ATS), All-Terrain Xtra (ATX), and All-Terrain Versatility (ATV) grinds in Hi-Toe 4 provide plenty of versatility and are suited for all conditions. The ATS grind’s four-way camber makes it easy to manipulate the face to hit different shots.

The ATX grind is great for golfers that are a little steeper because it’s the most forgiving in the Hi-Toe 4 lineup. The sole features three different surfaces: the leading edge keeps the club from digging, the mid sole keeps the clubface stable, and the trailing edge facilitates a quick exit from the turf.

Hi-Toe 4's ATV grind is ideal for players that have shallow angles of attack and play off firm, tight turf. These players like to play with an open face and hit a wide variety of short game shots.

In MG4, the Standard Bounce (SB) and Standard Bounce Camber (SBC) grinds are great for players that like playing with a square face, but also appreciate the ability to manipulate the face to hit different shots. The full-sole design of the SB grind features trailing edge relief and a four-way camber for plenty of versatility. For golfers that want maximum versatility, the added bounce and camber in the middle of the SBC grind allow them to open and close the face with ease.

The Hi-Toe 4 ATS, ATX and ATV grinds, and the MG4 SB and SBC grinds are suitable for the widest array of swing types and playing conditions.

LOW-BOUNCE GRINDS

Better players often prefer grinds with a low bounce. However, low bounce wedges are also great for players that have shallow angles of attack or play in firm conditions.

The lowest bounce option in Hi-Toe 4 is the All-Terrain C (ATC) grind. The narrow split and reverse-C design of ATC has ample heel and toe relief which makes it easy manipulate the face, especially when there isn’t much cushion under the ball.

MG4 LBV 3 Q

Like Hi-Toe 4, the MG4 Low Bounce (LB) option has a modified C-shape grind that provides plenty of toe relief making it easy to play shots in the open face position. The addition of a leading-edge ski also allows it to sit close to the ground.

The MG4 Low Bounce Versatility (LBV) grind is preferred by players with the shallowest attack angles and those that seek maximum versatility. The aggressive, narrow V-sole provides the lowest leading edge allowing open face shots to be played with ease off tight lies.

PROVEN TAYLORMADE TECHNOLOGIES

Both Hi-Toe 4 and MG4 wedges feature cutting-edge technologies that help golfers get the most out of their short game.

Spin Tread technology was first introduced in MG4, and it’s also found in Hi-Toe 4. The raw faces of both wedges are laser-etched with spin treads that increase friction with the ball at impact. This helps create more spin giving you precise control. If you’re playing in wet conditions, Spin Tread tech also channels away moisture and helps to retain spin.

The soles of both Hi-Toe 4 and MG4 are machine milled. This accomplishes two things: 1) It eliminates human error during the production process to ensure unmatched consistency and craftsmanship. 2) Milled grind soles foster consistent turf interaction out of any lie.

WEDGE SET MAKEUP

If you’re going to take your short game to the next level, you can’t leave anything to chance. That means having the right wedges in the right spots in your bag, and maybe even playing a combination of both Hi-Toe 4 and MG4.

Let’s say you could use a little more forgiveness on full yardage shots, your angle of attack is relatively neutral, and you play in a wide variety of conditions. However, maybe you like the look of a more traditional wedge as you get closer to the green. In this scenario, you might opt for a 50° or 52° Hi-Toe 4 wedge in the ATS grind to give you the full-swing forgiveness you’re looking for, and a combination of MG4 54°, 56°, 58° and 60° wedges for shots closer to the green. Here again, there are plenty of options.
