TaylorMade Gear

With the original SIM, TaylorMade focused on reshaping the driver to deliver speed and aerodynamics at the most critical stage of the swing – those milliseconds right before impact. Embracing the evolution of design, the new SIM2 family maintains all the aerodynamics and speed of the originals but with the added bonus of increased forgiveness.

It’s a performance feature that rings true among the entire line. SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max•D are each extremely forgiving. Beyond that adjoining attribute, the family shares a number of similarities such as crisp aesthetics with a black satin carbon crown and two-tone alignment, as well as the signature Inertia Generator. Furthermore, proven technologies such as Speed Injected Twist Face, a Speed Pocket and a 4° loft sleeve are found in all three models.

Forged Ring Construction unites SIM2 drivers into a singular force.

To unlock this new dimension of forgiveness across SIM2, TaylorMade reconstructed drivers in 2021. Engineers were forced to completely rethink how drivers are built from the ground up, fixating on the process and materials. The hidden key is a new design called Forged Ring Construction. Utilizing a lightweight and high strength aluminum that’s precision milled, the connecting feature unites the critical components of the driver head into a singular force.

As the defining component of SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max•D, the forged aluminum ring is one of four crucial elements of the unique construction – each serving a vital function that allows the driver to be forgiving, fast and powerful. The other modules are the carbon crown, carbon sole and milled back face cup.

  1. Carbon Crown and Sole – A 6-layer carbon composite crown delivers a sleek black satin finish while saving considerable weight that’s redistributed for increased MOI. Further weight savings come from the durable 9-layer carbon sole that also forms the Inertia Generator. The lightweight sole panel is strategically shaped to improve aerodynamics at the most critical phase of the swing for faster clubhead speeds.
  2. Milled Back Face Cup – The milled back face cup is the only part of the driver head that’s crafted from titanium. The strong and resilient material facilitates energy transfer to encourage faster ball speeds. Behind the face, internal CNC milling varies face thickness and pinpoints performance where golfers need it the most. It works in unison with a new toe-side Speed Injection Port to push ball speeds to the threshold of the maximum legal limit.

The trio is truly a family, but there are discernible differences that make each driver more playable for certain golfers with launch and spin as the separating factors.

SIM2 delivers lower spin rates and a mid-launch, making it ideal for higher swing speed players who place a premium on distance without the sacrificing forgiveness. SIM2 Max is a mid-low spin driver head that promotes a higher launch and produces maximum forgiveness.

SIM2 Max•D pushes the limits of draw bias designs. Historically, these drivers have not been forgiving – as the higher CG needed to create the necessary spin led to a lower MOI and decreased forgiveness. There was a tradeoff. Designers gave up forgiveness to correct the right miss.

However, that’s counterintuitive. The golfers who need the most forgiveness are the same ones who benefit from a draw driver. That’s why TaylorMade flipped this design convention on its head. SIM2 Max•D delivers draw-bias with a stable feel and the highest MOI of any driver in the SIM2 family. By shifting the entire Inertia Generator structure towards the heel, engineers were able to obtain draw-bias properties while also keeping its full function of aerodynamics and forgiveness. This driver is the ideal fit for the golfer who fights the right-miss and needs max forgiveness with high launch.

Performance Comparison – Differentiating Between SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max•D

SIM2
Traditional driver designs come with a tradeoff, but TaylorMade journeyed beyond tradition to obtain power, speed and forgiveness in a low spin driver. The reconstructed SIM2 delivers high MOI properties with a heavy 16g steel weight positioned on the Inertia Generator. The TPS Front Weight is strategically located behind the face to encourage optimal launch with low spin characteristics, delivering complete performance that’s low on spin and high on forgiveness.

SIM2 Max
With an intense focus on speed and forgiveness, the SIM2 Max delivers high MOI properties with a heavy 24g tungsten weight positioned on the Inertia Generator. The TPS Front Weight is strategically located on the sole of the club to encourage the optimal mid-to-high launch with mid-to-low spin properties, delivering complete performance and max forgiveness.

SIM2 Max•D
Draw-bias drivers normally come with a tradeoff, sacrificing forgiveness for a left-to-right ball flight. The all-new SIM2 Max•D features a repositioned Inertia Generator that’s closer to the heel, encouraging a heel CG that’s low and back for more forgiveness – designed to deliver a higher launch with the largest, most forgiving face in the SIM2 lineup. The end result, a draw-biased driver without compromise.
