TaylorMade Gear

Let’s start this article with what may seem like a trick question, but in reality, it is a simple one. What is the most used piece of equipment in your golf bag?

No, it is not any of your golf clubs. Yes, it is your golf ball.

So, instead of using the ball you found in the woods, the ball that came in the gift bag at your company golf outing or the ball that an ad tells you is the number one ball…why not play the number one ball…for YOU?

Enter the all-new TP5 and TP5x golf balls. It’s a choice between the softest and fastest five-layer tour balls.

Tour validation came quickly with four-time major champion Rory McIlroy making the switch to what he has proven to be a half-club longer TP5x. In his second start with the 2024 TP5x, Rory won his record setting fourth Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Let's go on a deep dive behind the technology of 2024 TP5 and TP5x and break down which ball is the right ball for you.

What’s New in TP5 and TP5x: The Need for Speed Wrapped Core

The latest evolution of the TP5/TP5x family takes a giant leap forward with an all-new Speed Wrapped Core that impacts speed, sound, feel and overall performance.

Since debuting in 2017, the TP5/TP5x franchise has consistently delivered premium results at every level of the game. The proprietary 5-layer construction has continually evolved to enhance tee-to-green performance with breakthrough technologies that boost distance, wind stability and greenside control.

The first-of-its-kind Speed Wrapped Core produces a softer sound with better feel while paving the way for a faster overall construction.

Unsurprisingly, our countless player testing on both the amateur and professional levels favor a softer more muted sound with added distance. The challenge for engineers has always been the inability to improve one without negatively impacting the other.

With Speed Wrapped Core, our TaylorMade engineers broke that barrier and evolved our golf ball creation process by uniquely separating the approach of designing the feel of the ball and the speed it produces.

This represents a complete departure from the conventional that results in the best feel in the golf ball industry with faster constructions.

New Progressive 5-Layer Design

This year also marks a critical evolution of the patented Speed Gradient construction that defines the TP5/TP5x franchise. A new progressive 5-layer design fueled by the Speed Wrapped Core optimizes every shot necessary in your bag by various combinations of each of the five layers.

This results in reduced spin on drivers and long irons while enhancing spin control for wedges. The beauty of the variability of this new five-layer design is that it allows you to have a faster ball speeds with driver and more control around the greens without having to choose just one of those things.

Choosing Between TP5 & TP5x

UPDATED Golf Ball Fitting Chart

TP5 and TP5x represent two distinct choices that cater to different player preferences: spin vs. speed.

You aren’t picking between one or the other, though. You’re picking a ball with tour level spin and speed, just at the level of performance that best suits your game.

TP5x prioritizes ball speed, making it the ideal choice for golfers seeking lower driver spin with increased velocity off the clubface. This year’s TP5x also sees a reduction in long iron spin, producing a half club increased distance, while still maintaining greenside control.

TP5 offers a notably softer feel with enhanced spin around the green. It is best fit for golfers who prioritize touch and feel in their short game, providing responsive and precise control. The new TP5 produces lower driver spin than the prior generation but maintains its best-in-class greenside performance.

While both 2024 models boast decreased spin on drivers and long irons with maintained wedge spin (compared to the previous generation), spin variance is still the greatest differentiator between TP5 and TP5x.

Ultimately, the choice between the TP5 and TP5x hinges on individual playing styles and preferences, as TaylorMade provides you the flexibility to select a ball that aligns with your specific needs without sacrificing any tee-to-green performance.

If you are enjoying the possibility of having choices, TP5 and TP5x also come in an all-new Hi-Vis Yellow. While many high-visibility golf balls rely solely on a painted finish, we doubled down for added durability. An enriched yellow urethane cover means that your golf ball stays brighter for longer with no chipped paint and better color retention.

All-New TP5/TP5x pix™ with ClearPath Alignment™

The 2024 TP5/TP5x pix™ golf balls build on the groundbreaking visual technology of ClearPath Alignment™, which is the most played all-over print visual technology on Tour.

Compared to previous generations, the new model features a longer centerline and additional color contrast, offering golfers easier alignment and more precise feedback on the green.

In response to consumer and Tour feedback, the new pix graphic has shifted from a “motion” triangle to a diamond shape and has been rearranged with a more centralized orange color palate.

This adjustment adds more color and strategically moves black elements away from the centerline, enhancing visibility and making alignment even more user-friendly.

The TP5/TP5x pix, with its multi-color, high-contrast graphics, ensures exceptional visibility in all conditions, further enhancing your experience on the course.
