An Inside Look at P·790 | True Beauty Lies Within
Clean, minimalistic, drool-inspiring aesthetics that scream to be hit are a mainstay of the P·790 franchise, and the latest model upholds that history. New for 2023, the design team placed a band of tour satin across the pearl chrome finish to create an mmm mmm good look.
However, with these irons, it’s what you can't see that truly sets them apart.
FROM THE OUTSIDE IN
Before we take an in-depth look at the internal technology that powers this new design, we must first explore how the overall design played a critical role in determining each iron's internal structure.

Golf club design is a delicate dance of creating, shifting and optimizing weight. Changes to any area of the iron will have an impact on performance. Before we could start on the internal design of the new P·790, we needed to determine how much discretionary mass was available in each head. That's influenced by the external shape, so understanding that was essential for what we wanted to accomplish. Locking in every element of the aesthetic from the top line to the sole.
HARVESTING ADDITIONAL MASS
One gram can go a long way in when constructing golf equipment. With P·790 we harvested up to 8g of weight from certain irons, and when you give engineers that much mass to play with they can do some pretty creative things. Where’d all that extra weight come from? Here’s how we mined the mass.
Thick-Thin Wall Construction – This is the first time thick-thin wall construction has been used in P·790. Honeycombed cutouts puzzled across the internal back wall remove excess weight from above the strike zone. This allows engineers to strategically position more weight lower in the clubhead to achieve precise performance characteristics.
SpeedFoam™ Air – SpeedFoam has been integral for the feel and performance of P790 from the start. The proprietary urethane material fills the hollow-body construction to dampen vibrations at impact and help produce a forged iron feel. The lighter “Air” version also creates weight savings that can be intelligently redistributed.
EVERY CLUB IS DIFFERENT
The team pinpointed a specific outcome for each individual iron. For long irons (3-5), the goal was increased launch. For mid-irons, increased MOI and an expanded the COR area (sweet spot). For scoring clubs, it was control, trajectory and optimal spin.
To determine the ideal internal mass distribution of each iron, we turned to a powerful resource that's being applied in industries worldwide. Artificial intelligence. Armed with an equation that included our desired output, various material usages and discretionary weight properties, we produced AI-driven mass optimization within each P·790 head – ensuring that every gram was strategically placed to deliver the best possible result for that specific iron.
The outcome? Internal structures that look more like a Rorschach test than a high-powered iron. Rest assured, these placements are anything but random – and their purpose is not left to interpretation.
3-5 Iron
Observational data suggests many players start to lose confidence in their ball striking in the 3-5 iron range. Why? There's less loft and less club face to work with. We prioritized launch and forgiveness in the long irons to combat that loss of confidence. While the desired outcome is the same within this subset, the internal structures within each iron have some unique idiosyncrasies. Each long iron features a heavy tungsten weight positioned low and towards the toe, but the noticeable difference is the sound stabilization bar. (It's that finger-like structure that extends vertically within each clubhead.)

두꺼운 벽에서 얇은 벽으로 이어지는 구조에서도 차별화된 매력을 느낄 수 있습니다. 아이언 내부 벽에 자리잡은 벌집 형태의 영역을 의미하는 이 구조는, 아이언 상부의 무게를 줄이고 클럽 아래쪽에 무게를 재배치할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다. 이는 CG를 낮추어 볼이 더욱 높게 날아가게 됩니다.
이렇게 탄생한 아이언은 각 헤드마다 최적화된 런치, 관용성, 타구음과 타구감을 제공합니다.
P·790 제품 라인에서는 6번 아이언이 롱 아이언에 해당하는 3번에서 5번 아이언과 더 높은 스코어를 위한 7번과 8번 클럽 사이에서 성능 간의 격차를 줄여주는 역할을 합니다. 6번 아이언의 내부 구조를 자세히 들여다보면, 이는 양쪽의 특성을 모두 지니고 있습니다. 텅스텐 웨이트는 7번 아이언과 같이 토우 쪽으로 이동해 있지만, 사운드 바는 롱 아이언과 마찬가지로 헤드의 중앙 부분에 가깝게 위치해 있습니다.
6번 아이언의 CG는 이렇게 5번과 7번 아이언 사이에 바로 배치되어 P·790 세트의 FLTD CG 구조를 유지할 수 있도록 해줍니다. P·790에서 최초로 선보이는 전략적 디자인(FLTD CG)은 롱 아이언의 무게 중심을 가장 낮게 두고 전체 세트를 아울러 점진적으로 더 높게 배치되는 식으로 구성되었습니다. 이처럼 직관적인 컨셉은 롱 아이언에서 보다 런치가 용이하고 뛰어난 관용성을 선사합니다. 이와 대비하여 보다 짧고 약한 로프트를 지닌 아이언은 CG가 더 높아 볼의 비거리를 컨트롤하고 스핀을 최적화할 수 있습니다.
많은 골퍼에게 있어 7번 아이언은 "스코어를 위한 클럽"의 시작, 즉 그린에 접근할 만큼 충분한 자신감을 획득했음을 의미합니다. 이 단계에서는 로프트와 친숙해져야 하므로, 공중으로 볼을 런칭하기보다는 컨트롤, 일관성, 최적의 스핀을 요합니다. P·790 7번 아이언의 내부 구조는 바로 이 점을 확보할 수 있도록 제작되었습니다.
전체 세트에서 일관적인 관용성과 볼 스피드를 경험할 수 있지만, 7번 아이언부터는 더욱 탁월한 수준의 정확도를 경험할 수 있습니다. 텅스텐 웨이트를 낮게, 토우 가까이로 이동시키면 클럽헤드의 관성 모멘트(MOI, Moment of Inertia)가 높아지게 됩니다. MOI가 더 높으면 임팩트 시 클럽헤드가 비틀림 또는 회전을 더욱 잘 버텨낼 수 있습니다. 즉 중심에서 벗어나 토우에 가깝게 타구하여 비거리의 손실을 줄이고 정확도를 유지하여 미스 샷을 최소화할 수 있습니다.
세트 전체에서 가장 관용성이 가장 높은 아이언으로 손꼽힙니다. 8번 아이언의 경우, THICK-THIN BACK WALL 기술로CG가 계속해서 점차 더 높은 곳에 위치할 수 있도록 무게 중심의 위치를 세팅하였습니다. 9번 아이언과 PW는 보다 전통적인 단조 중공 구조를 갖추었으며, 동시에 일관성, 정확도, 최적의 스핀을 확보하는 FLTD CG 구조를 유지하여 탄도를 컨트롤을 도와줍니다.
